For the first time such high end Paediatric Ortho surgery was performed in Apollo Hospitals, Bhubaneswar. The condition of baby is found well after the surgery.
On this successful operation, Dr. Biraj Mohan Mishra, Medical Superintendent, Apollo Hospitals, Bhubaneswar said, “ Apollo Hospitals, Bhubaneswar has set an another benchmark in medical science by successfully conducting an open reduction of left hip surgery on a 10 month old baby.” Dr. Mishra congratulated the team headed by Dr. Debabrata Padhy, Consultant, Orthopaedic Surgery. This team was assisted by senior Anesthesia consultant, Dr. Debabrata Dash and other senior medical staff.
Developmental Dysplasia of Hip (DDH) also known as Congenital Dislocation of Hip (CDH) is a disease found in new born babies. Babies can have this type of disease in isolation and also associated with anomalies of systems of the body, said Dr. Padhy adding that it is an anomalous condition which develops during the development of the hip when baby is inside the womb. The head of the hip joint gradually comes out of the cup as the baby grows and then stays permanently outside the joint if it is not taken care of properly, he further said.
Maximum babies with DDH can be treated a typical type of belt (Pawlik Harness) from birth if they are detected of having the disease from birth or in utero (womb). Treatment by belt is sufficient if done within six months of birth. Sometimes this is not sufficient and babies need surgery to correct the deformity after nine months of age. Delay in surgery complicates the case. High end paediatric orthopaedics surgery needs skill and experience. In this type of surgery, incision line is not seen outside the underwear near the hip joint.
