Tata Steel Provides Water Purifiers to Anganwadi Centres of Ganjam District

trcGopalpur: With an objective of prioritising provision of safe drinking water for the habitations especially for the women and children, industry major Tata Steel distributed water purifiers in the Phailin and post-flood affected areas of Ganjam district. The company has provided around 6500 ‘Tata Swach’ high quality water purifier to district administration, out of which nearly 5000 will be given to AnganwadiCentres of the district in coordination with the ICDS Projects run by W & CD Department of Govt of Odisha.A recent report circulated by an international development organisation highlights that annually around 37.7 million Indians are affected by water borne diseases whereas more than 1.5 million children die every year because of Diarrhoea. The provisioning of safe drinking water in the entire Anganwadi Centres of Ganjam district will benefit more than 3 lakh 25 thousand children below the age group of 6 years and around 81 thousand pregnant and lactating mothers covered by 4968 AWCs of the 24 PanchayatSamiti in the district.

At a time when the government and global aid agencies are joining hands for ensuring safe drinking water keeping pace with the strive towards Millennium Development Goals of United Nations, this initiative of Tata Steel as a mark of its social responsibility perspective has been largely appreciated by key stakeholders.
